PEC is the sole authority responsible for overseeing all elections, as well as the registration of citizens and political associations/parties in Puntland.
Our Statement
The Puntland Electoral Commission (PEC) was established 2012 to oversee the democratic electoral processes within Puntland, a federal member state of Somalia. As a cornerstone of Puntland’s commitment to democracy, PEC ensures free, fair, and transparent elections by managing electoral activities and upholding the principles of inclusivity and impartiality.
Since its inception, PEC has played a vital role in fostering public trust in the electoral system. The commission is responsible for elections, registration of voters, political parties, constitutional referendums as well as the resolution of electoral disputes. PEC works closely with local stakeholders, political parties, and international partners to strengthen democratic governance and promote civic engagement across Puntland.
Through its efforts, the Puntland Electoral Commission continues to advance the principles of good governance, accountability, and political stability in the region.
What We Do
To conduct state-wide elections in Puntland, that instill trust and promote a spirit of integrity, inclusivity, fairness, and engagement in democratic practices
To achieve this goal, significant efforts are required to facilitate the implementation of elections across all levels of the Puntland government. This includes, most notably, the development of election rules and guidelines, as well as the registration and verification of political parties.
What We Did
2022-2024
- Successfully concluded local government elections by conducting state-wide polls across 36 districts
- Registred more than 400k Voters
- Certification of the Winning Political Parties
2021
- Successfully conducted local government elections in three districts—Eyl, Ufayn, and Qardho—marking a historic milestone as the first local government elections in Puntland's history.
2019-2020
- Design and outline comprehensive plans for the effective organization and execution of Puntland's elections, ensuring alignment with democratic principles and governance goals and formally launch the fundamental rules and guidelines necessary for the smooth and transparent implementation of the electoral process.
